Friends Great discussion on the above subject. Yes, we need entrepreneurs; and NO, not everyone can be one. In the latter case, we need risk capital and entrepreneurial injection to make the ideas a success. There is also a famous article that once appeared in Havard Business Review titled "Why Entrepreneurs Don't Scale"; they should hatch ideas, demonstrate that the ideas can be commercialized and step off and leave business leaders and managers scale up the business. We have a short supply of the latter and need to invest in their development. There is also the environment in which ideas thrive; a technical idea, hatched by a technical person doesn't necessarily turn out as would be intended. The path to development is a graveyard of many, many initiatives that started and died; but later some (with luck) are picked up by others that had a more well-rounded understanding of the same or when the right time had come. How do we increase the chances of success of ideas? I think we need to co-locate technical (e.g. product, service creation), business (business viability, etc.) and law (confines of law: securing IP, formalizing org, etc.) faculties/institutions. The informal interactions amongst students, researches, and faculty in these areas can be an incubation laboratory for many an enterprise. The knowledge exchange (informal and otherwise), relationships forged and trust engendered can be the foundation for long term business success. This suggests that they way we are building and deploying our institutes of higher learning and research doesn't fit with the above scenario. Example: faculty of commerce at UoN shouldn't have moved to Kabete but stayed alongside engineering or both should have moved to the same location; ditto for law. Someone once asked what happens when you put an engineer, sociologist, lawyer, accountant, etc together! The answer: something much bigger than the sum of the individual parts! We need environments where players (with difference background) can interact more and on an ongoing basis. Today, we have universities operating out of high-rise towers where students jet in for class and take off thereafter, with little time to be with colleagues, consult with faculty or simply hang out with others attending a seminar here or another there, in one's line of study or not. Ideally we need campus/research zones, complete with residential facilities, sports, seminar rooms, labs; alongside industrial parks and business advisory centres. And as longer as we go that way we will have to sacrifice on some cosmetic addons which do not enhance the flow of TCP IP packets. To my mind, its not just about traffic flows, it's about value added services. Here in KE, we have root servers, NTP servers, an Akamai node (I think, but am not 100% on that one), .com and .net servers, route reflectors, looking glasses, a nascent CSIRT, etc. I guess my point is that KIXP is more like LINX in London, or AMSIX in Amsterdam than it is like UIXP. I think this is a good thing, and should be applauded. My mail was in reaction to Robert who was calling for more government involvement/control of peering in Kenya. I think you would agree that this is not desirable. The IX is an Ethernet switch and it will always be that. Sir Isaac Newton was an English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, alchemist, inventor and natural philosopher. He is often regarded as the most influential scientist in history and is most famous for discovering the Laws of Gravity. He is quoted as having said “*If I have seen further it is only by standing on the shoulders of giants.*” I have heard many enterprising developers say that they have interest working with Safaricom and other industry leaders to expand their innovations to a wider market. One huge setback facing such developers is when the giant attempts to step on the poor developers by slaming them with “big-boy” revenue-share agreements. Why is revenue share is so inhibitive in our market? Currently if you partner with Safaricom, they will take about 60% of revenues (i stand to be corrected as i have not signed up with them yet). Elsewhere in the world, like in Japan, 70% goes to the developer. Nokia is also helping local developers market their apps globally, Nokia takes 30% and pays out 70% to the developer. I would be happy to hear more from Safaricom on this. How can Safaricom encourage us to test our innovations in this market as you have done so well with M-PESA before exporting it to other countries? The companies are coming together to help motivate organizations across the industry—Internet service providers, hardware manufacturers, operating system vendors and other web companies—to prepare their services for the transition. The Internet Society is supporting World IPv6 Day as part of its efforts to accelerate IPv6 deployment. “2011 is a pivotal year in IPv6 deployment, and World IPv6 Day will prove to be an important milestone,” commented Leslie Daigle, the Internet Society’s Chief Internet Technology officer. “By providing an opportunity for the Internet industry to collaborate to test IPv6 readiness we expect to lay the groundwork for large-scale IPv6 adoption and help make IPv6 ready for prime time. The greater the scope of the trial, the more effective it will be for all participants so we wholeheartedly welcome additional participants.” IPv6, the successor to the protocol currently used on the Internet, was designed in the late 1990s but has not seen deployment on a global scale. With IPv4 address space running out, the industry cannot afford to wait much longer. Vint Cerf, Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist and co-inventor of the TCP/IP protocol stack, commented, "In the short history of the Internet, the transition to IPv6 is one of the most important steps we will take together to protect the Internet as we know it. It's as if the Internet was originally designed with a limited number of telephone numbers, and we're soon going to run out." Google has offered a separate IPv6-only version of search on ipv6.google.com <http://ipv6.google.com/>since early 2008, and during World IPv6 Day the company will enable IPv6 for its main websites, including www.google.com <http://www.google.com/>and www.youtube.com <http://www.youtube.com/>. Given the diversity of technology that powers the Internet, the global nature of the trial is crucial to identify unforeseen problems. “Participating in World IPv6 Day will allow us to obtain real-life data that we can use to ensure a seamless user experience as we transition to IPv6,” said Adam Bechtel, Vice President for Yahoo’s Infrastructure Group. “We welcome this opportunity to collaborate with the technical community and provide leadership in addressing the scaling challenges facing the Internet.” World IPv6 Day marks a key milestone in enabling more and more computers and smart phones to come online. I agree Muriuki - we've reached a watershed point here. At a regional level Airtel have a subscriber base that other operators cannot rival (even those outside Kenya excl the other multi country operators like MTN, Vodacom, Etisalat, etc). In some of their markets they still have healthy ARPU and as #1 operator in those countries thus perhaps can subsidise costs across some borders. Further, their capex model is getting more and more lean, and at a time when even regulators are encouraging sharing of non-core infrastructure and co-location. Airtel has taken this a step further to outsource other infrastructure and services. I recently read an article on the new socialism and the opening paragraph quotes Bill Gates on open source "these folks are a new modern-day sort of communists, a malevolent force force bent on destroying the monopolistic incentive that helps support the American Dream". The author goes on to quote Clay Shirky who explains modern socialism "groups of people start off simply sharing and then progress to cooperation, collaboration, and finally collectivism". This statement says a lot about where we are as members of this forum, we are still working at the sharing stage many prefer to only receive but never contribute. We need to make this year the year of sharing ideas, thoughts, dreams and expectations which should help us progress to cooperation. Let us not be like Bill Gates with his idea of open source but more like Linus, Larry Page, David Filo and Jerry Yang. Share your thoughts today. I wonder what are possibilities for local assembly of set top boxes and other accessories on this platform are compared to the ISDB-T platform. 4G Bombshell from Government

Hi, I would to begin by wishing you all the best this year in all facets of your life's. Those of us who where fortunate enough to attend the CIO-100 symposium late last year might have heard the mouths of the mobile providers hit the ground when PS. Ndemo mentioned that the government will be rolling out the 4G spectrum and will make it open to all. From the reaction of the providers it was clear that they did not have the foggiest idea that it was forthcoming. Now we can move forward to a level playing field where your dominance is not dependent on the size of your wallet but by what services and solutions you can offer. In the same breath we need to support the government in making sure that SIGNET is allowed to offer digital channels to all and sundry, the oligopolistic behaviour of our mainstream media houses must not be allowed to stop progress. I am in the market for a digital channel to be able to provide relevant and sensible programming (backed by PCK as soon as I am appointed PMG). It is reassuring to see that when the government refers to super highways they mean more than just the tar covered ones. Congratulations are in order for these young girls in the above story; kudos. My reading is that there are many such stories and potential successes that could happen. This was reinforced when I saw presentations at the most recent AITEC event in Nairobi. We just need the right environment and our tech sector will take off to even higher heights than the present trend suggests. Couple of things that could help: * Protection of Intellectual Property: I marveled at the ease with which those at the conference shared their creations and even creations that were on the drawing board! Question: how do they know who the prying eyes are in the public event? And prying eyes with deeper pockets and better knowledge of the business of IT? * Risk Capital: Silicon Valley wouldn't have been without risk capital? RIM (that produces the blackberry), one of the most successful Canadian tech creations, would not have happened without risk capital. For the longest time, the latter depended on government grants, which allowed them to go thru' teething stages! In Kenya, we may not have the kind money Canada has thrown into R&D in form of grants. However, we can have a variation of this. One possibility I have shared with friends relates to incentives, i.e. tax credits, R&D Levy Fund from which companies can get back some of the money invested in R&D, and even some form of "insurance" where risk capital would be compensated at a given % should a venture not materialize! * Active scouting of ideas for development in science fairs, tech conferences, etc and investing in those that offer promise. It reminds of a science project we did in high school: powering a radio using stored energy in a wind up spring! We got good marks; and off we went later to university, forgot about it and lo! years later, someone was selling wind up radios in rural Africa! Google's appointment shows its confidence in Africa's digital growth and recognises the continent as a future tech giant. Okolloh is a TED <http://www.ted.com> fellow, Global Voices contributor <http://www.globalvoicesonline.org/author/ory/>and a Harvard-educated lawyer. She is a regular speaker at prestigious conferences such as TED, World Economic Forum <http://www.weforum.org>, Poptech <http://www.poptech.org>, CGI, Techonomy <http://www.techonomy.com>, Mobile Web Africa <http://www.mobilewebafrica.com>, and the Monaco Media Forum <http://www.monacomediaforum.org/>on issues around citizen journalism. IP Theft, a scam or both?

I saw a facebook ad about pencil sketches and followed it since I have been thinking of getting one done of my Mum. http://www.pencilportraits.co.ke/index.html Hmm...looks good...at the back of my mind I thought "How sure are we the sketches are not photoshopped or paintbrushed or whatever graphic-apped... you could do a scan, render a black and white, add pencil effects, smudge, smoothen, etc.... Price range between kshs 4000 and 12000....so I decided to click on the "Letters from clients link" http://www.pencilportraits.co.ke/letters_from_clients.html Then I knew for sure it was a rip off after reading the quote at the top of the page....can't be original. So I took an excerpt of the quote and googled it...and voila...two results: that site given above and http://www.pencil-portrait-drawing-artist.com/pencilportraitclients.html A near verbatim reproduction of it (the letters from clients are identical except for the names and cities). Being someone who earns part of his living off original work, I have written to both addresses and given both links in one email... It may be that one is imitating the other....it may also be that BOTH are doing photoshop portraits. Having said that, I will rasterise, vectorise, smudge and smoothen your pictures at 400 bob each incl 50 bob postage. To make it look real, I'll go over it with an HB2 pencil.... Special offer for the first 10 clients I will enhance any body features you desire ;-)
