99% of Kenya’s 6.5m internet users access it via mobile, of which Safaricom owns 77% marketshare.In Kenya, when you buy a 1.5Gb internet bundle from Safaricom you pay 1000ksh (~$12). You’ve paid for the data, and there is no additional cost to Safaricom if you were to use that data today or a year from now. The whole concept of data bundle expiry is ridiculous, as noted by Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore when he visited the iHub:“When you go into a petrol station and fill up your car, does the owner of the petrol station tell you to bring it back on Wednesday to take back what’s left in the vehicle? Dear All, Just to clarify that indeed the Telecommunication Service Providers through one of her members Internet Solutions Sponsored the Internet for Kenya IGF and East African IGF. They also chaired a couple of sessions. I suppose the questions may have been targeted to specific service providers who didn't have representatives hence the confusion, i recall a similar question being posed about KeNIC which was actually a key sponsor of the two events, i suppose in future we may want to allow the service providers to run some videos on what they do. Hello Harry, Thanks for your email. The problem that was affecting the main cables serving Loita Street was compounded by burst sewers underground due to the flooding of previous months. We had to get City Council to sort out the sewers and shut down the services from Saturday June 23rd pm to Monday June 25th 8am after which services resumed in the area. The Policy meeting which will be hosted by ZICTA, the Zambian regulator, will be held from 23 – 27 July 2012 and will focus on enhancing the visibility of African ccTLDs through branding and marketing, examining the likely impact of new gTLDs on African ccTLDS as well enhancing the robustness and efficiency of African registries by improving the technical infrastructure. Daniel Jury (Judge?) still out on whether ATU/ITU need greater influence on internet governance. I think that the ecosystem that has worked pretty well to a large extent needs to be expanded to include these players and not necessarily giving any one or two player greater control... Having said that can the conveners please circulate the final discussion points and way forward of the last day of the EAIGF? Kudos again to the Young Turks (Barrack, Gracex2 etc) and Alice for great organisation and content. The Center for Intellectual Property and Information Technology (CIPIT) will be hosting a seminar and training workshop focusing on protecting Intellectual Property (IP) in the ICT sector. The seminar/workshop will be at Strathmore University, and is co-hosted by iBizAfrica. On Aug. 14, the topic will be computer software patents. We will explore many issues both local and international, in an effort to answer two questions: (1) Is software patentable in Kenya? and (2) Should software be patentable in Kenya? On Aug. 15, we will answer the question: "how can people in the ICT industry protect their intellectual property?" This will be a highly practical (i.e., not academic and not theoretical) session and will cover many issues of IP. CIPIT is part of the new Strathmore Law School, and focuses on helping the ICT sector effectively use IP. More information will be posted in the next few days. Stay tuned!
