Research is indeed a long-term investment! This is what the UN Secretary General, Banki Moon, had to say about the research findings of this project, when addressing the 5th session of the UN Commission for Social Development …”The digital divide, that is, the gap in access to modern information and communication technologies, is becoming increasingly salient. Access to those technologies is increasingly recognized as an important means of improving the situation of excluded groups by reducing poverty, improving health and mitigating the impact of geographical isolation. A recent study in East Africa found that access to such technologies, particularly mobile phones and the Internet, helped to reduce poverty among the poorest populations.” He encouraged the commission to consider new technologies in the fight against poverty. Have market forces rendered this very emotive issue irrelevant? Is the action by Comcast Anti-Competitive? Why aren't the authorities in the US (the so called beacon for Net Neutrality) not doing anything about it? For the past two decades, the Internet has operated as an unregulated, competitive free market. Given the tendency of networked industries to lapse into monopoly—think of AT&T's 70-year hold over telephone service, for example—that's a minor miracle. But recent developments are putting the Internet's decentralized architecture in danger. In recent months, the nation's largest residential Internet service providers have been demanding payment to deliver Netflix traffic to their own customers. On Sunday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Netflix has agreed to the demands of the nation's largest broadband provider, Comcast. The change represents a fundamental shift in power in the Internet economy that threatens to undermine the competitive market structure that have served Internet users so well for the past two decades.
