Muraya Great questions on ICTA. Personally I'd love to have ICTA organize an open day to update industry players and Kenyans in General on their initiatives and how things ICT are moving forward. It is imperative that they communicate better than they are currently doing. For example:- 1. A quick check of the ICTA website on events in the ICT Sector produced the following result. (See attached screenshot). 2. A quick visit to the Apply to be a Mentor page shows that the link to the form doesn't work. (See attached screenshot) I personally believe ICTA is doing some great work in the background but their lack of communication is coming across like its a ship without a captain. Can we see a more vigorous ICTA that gives justice to our role in the Development of Technology in Africa? Another issue I have to raise is this:- Looking at the Board composition I'm shocked that there is no representation from the Industry and Consumer groups. 100% of the Board consists of Government Operatives. Surely there is something wrong with that?? Unless of course the website hasn't been updated. We encourage individuals from Africa in the academic (early career), NGO, technology, and public policy sectors to apply. Prospective applicants should have a particular area of interest related to internet governance and policymaking, censorship, surveillance, internet access, political engagement online, protection of human rights online, and/or corporate governance in the ICT sector. Could fake news have saved Kenya from an Internet shutdown?

Listers Interesting read. The Kenya General Elections on 8 August 2017 were not without surprises. In a historic determination, the Supreme Court invalidated the presidential election and ordered a repeat. Unlike many African countries that held elections in the recent past, Kenya did not shut down the Internet during the period. That the Internet remained open may be attributed to many factors. On the one hand, there was concerted advocacy by digital rights groups against a shutdown. On the other, there could have been disruptions that went unreported. But could the Internet have remained open because the government was also using the Internet to its own ends? Will it remain open during the repeat presidential election in October? Hasn't Uber hit trouble elsewhere in the world? Yes. Uber left the Texas city of Austin last year after it lost a referendum requiring strict background checks on its drivers.The company has since returned after making some changes, and the same could happen in London, predicts BBC North American tech correspondent Dave Lee.Uber has also run into trouble in major European cities, including in Paris, Brussels and Madrid.In June 2014, taxi drivers across Europe went on strike in protest at what they regarded as a lack of regulation of the mobile taxi-booking service.In September that same year, a court in Frankfurt, Germany, ruled that the firm lacked the necessary legal permits to operate under German law. Uber later withdrew its services from Frankfurt, Hamburg and Dusseldorf after its business was hampered by regulations.New laws for drivers introduced in Denmark in 2016, including mandatory meters, also saw the company pulling out after less than three years of service in the country. The firm said in a statement that "regulations need to change" in order for it to operate.Uber was banned in Italy earlier this year after a court in Rome upheld a complaint by taxi unions that the firm represented unfair competition for traditional taxis. The ban was later annulled following an appeal by the firm.
