Really guys?? What is going on? Isn't this the time that the Government focuses, really focuses all these projects through a credible Government Chief Information Officer? Or is this role being played by ICTA? If so I daresay they are doing a dismal job at it. Read on:- The Treasury has disowned a firm that was contracted to collect revenue on its behalf from eCitizen users, deepening the mystery of how a private company took over a role ordinarily handled by the KRA. Treasury principal secretary Kamau Thugge has in fresh court papers stated that the government did not authorise any private firm to receive eCitizen payments on its behalf. Hi Tomslin, Please read the following statement (ToS of 74 registrars who manage 90% of all domains.) In that case , the statement should be rephrased to specify that focus is on generic Top Level domains as opposed to all domains. Be that as it may , i was reading the domain wire global TLD report which had the following statistics. At the end of Q4 (2016) there were 309.4 million domain names across all TLDs. Out of this ccTLDs were 123.9 Million. From the statistics you can see that ccTLDs have significant registrations which may lend credence to the hypothesis i made. After one of the most highly contentious electioneering periods in Kenya’s history some hard questions need to be asked. 1. Is Ezekiel Mutua after all a visionary in his assertions about Social Media? 2. Have we allowed ourselves to be further divided by these platforms instead of using them to bring us closer together? 3, Have we allowed politicians and other influencers to literally take our freedoms to do what’s right? 4, Shouldn’t the whole world - State and Non-State Players - have taken Internet Governance (especially the Third Party Liability conversation) more seriously? 5. Is it too late to redeem ourselves? These and more are important issues to ponder. Barrack Not at all! In fact the printing press and other 'mass media' are becoming almost irrelevant in the scheme of things...Think of the 'Twitter Diplomacy' that is now the Hallmark of the Trump Presidency. My concerns are simply that by us (and I mean Kenya in particular and Africa in general) ignoring to put in place solid policies on how to engage in this new era we are living ourselves vulnerable to the vagaries of the Internet. On one hand we have positive influencers and the other negative influencers and in between you have governments that at best are incompetent to handle the *New Normal* and at worst reactionary and unleashing a hammer where a surgeon's scalpel would have been more appropriate. The Internet Governance Project did an analysis of the ToS of 74 registrars who manage 90% of all domains. In 2015, the antivirus scanner picked up the NSA's hacking tools, which landed in the Kremlin's hands, according to the report. Background In 2005, the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) began a Policy Development Process (PDP) to consider the introduction of new gTLDs. The two-year PDP process resulted in a set of 19 GNSO policy recommendations for implementing new gTLDs. In order to implement the policy recommendations of the GNSO, a number of draft Applicant Guidebooks (AGBs) were developed by ICANN staff in consultation with the community. In June 2011, ICANN's Board of Directors approved the final AGB and authorized the launch of the New gTLD Program. The New gTLD Program application window opened on 12 January 2012 and a total of 1930 complete applications were received. The first set of Initial Evaluation results were released on 22 March 2013, followed by the first set of new gTLD delegations on 21 October 2013. All applications have now completed the evaluation process and as of mid October 2017, there are over 1,200 gTLDs delegated. Although the 2012 round is ongoing, efforts to examine the round have already begun, which included the initiation of the GNSO's PDP on New gTLD Subsequent Procedures in early 2016. Listers, FYI SUMMARY This week, the world’s major internet companies are attending a G7 summit for the first time, in an urgent attempt to draw up tough new rules to counter the dramatic rise in the use of social media by cyber exremism. Besides, the European commission is seeking to give police greater powers to decrypt private messages as part of a wider proposal to crackdown on criminals. On Artificial intelligence, "A robot named Sophia was a panelist at a United Nations meeting Wednesday to demonstrate how artificial intelligence could help the organization move faster in facilitating progress and development across the globe". On taxation; France's President Emmanuel Macron made progress on his push to make companies like Amazon pay taxes where they make profits, and not in tax havens as European Union leaders said on Thursday they looked forward to seeing proposals on taxing online giants by early 2018. On cybersecurity, North Korea has dominated the headlines in recent weeks, as international tension climbs over the country’s nuclear aspirations and capabilities. Furthemore, Security researchers Mathy Vanhoef and Frank Piessens have detected a major vulnerability in the WPA2 protocol that secures all protected Wi-Fi networks. On digital rights, dozens of influential civil rights groups have called on EU decision-makers to abandon proposals for compulsory proactive copyright filters. Their open letter, addressed to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and colleagues, warns that monitoring citizens' Internet traffic would restrict fundamental rights while running counter to the Electronic Commerce Directive. Listers, The Internet Freedom Festival (IFF) just opened its call for proposals. As someone who has attended this event in the past, I think you would really love the IFF experience. You get to meet amazing, passionate people from around the world and learn important skills. Also, through their Diversity and Inclusion Fund, they will fund presenters from the Global South and underrepresented regions can receive travel funding. You can apply to be a speaker and request for travel assistance here: https://platform.internetfreedomfestival.org A bit of background: The IFF takes place every year in Valencia, Spain. It is considered one of the largest and most diverse inclusive gatherings in the Internet Freedom space. It brings together over 1000 people from +100 countries, to join forces against online censorship and surveillance. People in attendance includes activists, technologists, digital security trainers, journalists, designers, policy advocates, and much more. The goal of this one-of-a-kind gathering is to allow people to share knowledge and resources, and collectively improve the services, strategies, and tools offered to individuals on the frontlines.
