(and this answers those who always say -change the channel) And if the media cannot protect our kids from this, the Regulator has an obligation to do so. And I am not seeking for HEAVY censorship here from the Regulator. We are really busy with the ongoing East African Communications Congress and Exhibition taking place at the KICC. The responsibility of regulating broadcast content falls under two state agencies, CCK and the Kenya Film and Classification Board. The latter is mandated by law to classify all films for general exhibition (including those aired on TV). CCK on the other hand is supposed to regulate all other categories of broadcast content. CCK was vested with this responsibility in 2010 vide an amendment to our establishing legislation. However, a broadcaster went to court challenging the constitutional authority of CCK to regulate broadcasting content. Subsequently CCK was injuncted from exercising this responsibility until the matter is heard and determined. The matter is still before the courts, which means we cannot regulate broadcasting content in the interim. We had already developed the requisite regulatory tools and instruments in readiness to embarking on important responsibility of ensuring, among others, that minors are protected from adult content. A draft programme code, for instance, had been developed in readiness. The said programme code will be subjected to stakeholder consultation, as soon as the said matter is concluded. The current crop of startups boasts wacky spellings. The reason founders say, is that practically every new business—be it a popsicle maker or a furniture retailer—needs its own website. With about 252 million domain names currently registered across the Internet, the short, recognizable dot-com Web addresses, or URLs, have long been taken. I may add that ccTLDs are also increasingly becoming important for various reasons - defensive registrations, Geo-Targeting, primary domain etc. The Article below is instructive. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324263404578611772689785466.h… As this sector becomes increasingly important I again urge KeNIC and CCK to come clean on the rumors of winding up KeNIC without wider consultation. Request for opinion: What does "open" mean to you?

Listers, The School of Open <https://p2pu.org/en/schools/school-of-open/> at Peer 2 Peer University (P2PU) is starting up a new round of courses in August, 2013, and one of those is a course called “Why Open?” I’m writing to ask if you could fill out a very short survey to help contribute some content to this course. “Why Open?” is a 3-week long, facilitated course (meaning that participants and facilitators all go through it at the same time, rather than asynchronously) that is designed to help participants learn more about openness, recognize the benefits and challenges that can arise from opening up content or practices, and engage in some open practices themselves. It will run August 5-23, though participants will also complete a final project due around the end of August. You can see a draft of the course here: https://p2pu.org/en/courses/588/why-open/ In the first section of the course we ask participants to come with their own, preliminary understandings of what openness means. Then we will show them definitions by third parties and discuss the various meanings. We want to gather views from people with different expertise and backgrounds. One thing we will discuss is whether there are patterns in views of openness depending on profession or activity (e.g., do those in the sciences understand it differently than those in the technology fields, than those in arts or humanities, than those in business, etc.). When a company is full of executives who only ask each other "But why not?" these are the kind of proposals that come up: Google is putting forth an audacious proposal to use baloons to cover the world in Wi-Fi. The balloons will be carried by wind at altitudes twice as high as planes and beam Internet access to the ground at speeds similar to today’s 3G networks or faster. To whom it may concern at CCK/KeNIC Keeping mum on the issue of what's going on at KeNIC results in headline distortions (like the one above), speculation, suspicion of vested interests, corruption etc. A few days ago when the initial report came out from Rebecca's blog I urged the respective bodies concerned to officially let us know what is happening. We are still waiting. This is a national issue and worthy of your time and comment.
