Guidebook: Data Protection & Privacy in Kenya from a Gender Perspective

[image: FmQeo9NXoAIlAGo.png] Dear Listers, In 2019, Kenya enacted the Data Protection Act 2019 (DPA), to operationalize the right to privacy in Kenya. Since then, Kenya has established the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner whose mandate is to enforce data protection rights and principles as envisioned in the DPA. Despite this, there exists a gap in awareness and understanding of existing safeguards for data subjects and more so women under the law and privacy features on social media platforms. This guidebook aims to raise awareness on data protection and privacy in Kenya from a gender perspective. UNESCO Prize for the Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Education

The 2022 edition of the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Education<https://www.unesco.org/en/prizes/ict-education> is accepting nominations. All nominations should be submitted via the online platform<http://www.unesco.org/ict-ed-prize> by 23 January 2023. The theme of the 2022 edition is "The use of public platforms to ensure inclusive access to digital education content". It will reward projects that have made digital learning platforms and digital content more accessible, as well as those that have promoted universal connectivity in education and digital competencies for all teachers and learners. The 2022 theme is in line with the commitments made at the Transforming Education Summit, during which participating States reaffirmed that digital technologies should not widen but reduce learning gaps - and, to this end, it is essential to make digital resources available to all. Two projects will be selected, and each laureate will receive USD 25,000 and international recognition during an award ceremony at the UNESCO Headquarters. Hi Listers, As some of you may know, and have experienced, Zuku has been down since late Friday. Communication has been nonexistent and even when you finally get through to customer care after several minutes of hold you don't get any timelines on the restoration of service. This has led me to looking through a few of the CA's reports looking to see if there's any data on down times and other metrics that a home internet provider might be measured on. I couldn't find any. Does anyone know if the CA collects such data? If they do, where is it located? If not, what do they collect on home internet connections? If this data doesn't exist with CA does it exist somewhere else? I'd really like to change my provider using some data rather than anecdotal evidence. What are the other measures I can take, other than reporting to the CA, about this? ICT CS speaks on Revival of Huduma Namba Initiative

Dear Listers, "If it has not reached you", the Government plans to digitise over 5,000 government services. This was the genesis of the Huduma Namba revival discourse. The Huduma Namba was introduced in 2019 but the court halted its rollout due to inadequate public participation and issues to do with its compliance to Personal Data Protection Act. Airtel Kenya - compromised systems or backdoor access?

At the risk of being called naive (because I haven't done deeper research on how the alleged $subject is achieved), I'd like to know if there is someone else who thinks like me - that there is a problem at Airtel. I happen to have an Airtel phone number that I believe is perhaps one of the easiest to pick from a random pool (?) - 0732000004 (should I care about privacy?). In a week, I get at least 5 calls from the Mulot ICT Hub guys who are intent on either wiping clean my non-existent Airtel Money balance or they just want to take away my number (even though it's duly registered). I love playing games with these Mulot guys, but one thing has always gotten me intrigued: How they are able to generate OTPs instantly - from the Airtel systems, or some systems mimicking Airtel systems. All the OTPs they send to me in the process of trying to achieve their objectives (whatever it is), do come from (I believe) Airtel Systems - because on my phone, they are threaded together with messages that I do receive from Airtel. And my question then is - how is that possible without them having access to the Airtel system (that generates the OTP) either via a compromise or a deliberately provided backdoor (by an insider collaborator)? And what can I do to mitigate this?
