Itroducing the Kenya Internet Governance Forum Online Discussions #KEIGF2022

Good morning Listers, Receive warm greetings from the Multi Advisory Group (MAG) that has been working to prepare this year's Kenya Internet Governance Forum (KIGF). Ahead of the KIGF week, there shall be a series of online discussions to set the pace for the discussions that shall be held during the KIGF. The online discussion will run from the 22nd to the 24th of June and the following are the discussion topics. Day 1. *Governing data and protecting privacy.* Day 2. *ICT's and the upcoming elections.* Day 3. *Connecting all people and promoting cyber hygiene and emerging issues including youth, online work, inclusion and regulation.* The discussion topics shall be posted by a moderator and we invite all of you to participate. #KeIGF2022: KICTANet Prepares New Voices to Shape The Internet Governance Space

[image: KeSIG 2017.jpg] Dear Listers, To ensure we sustain and bring new voices into the Internet Governance Space, the Kenya School of Internet Governance (KeSIG) virtual sessions began Friday. KeSIG is one of KICTANet's capacity building programs that aims to promote diversity and inclusion in the country’s ICT policy dialogues and beyond. This years' cohort was drawn from a pool of 331 applications. The call for participation was targeted to individuals across the country interested in ICT policy and regulations. 118 applicants were selected ensuring gender, stakeholder and regional balance: Females (62), male (54), preferred not to say (1) and other (1). In terms of sectors, within the civil society organisations (14), academia (23), private sector (53), public sector (20) and from the media. Dear Listers, The Kenya ICT Action Network (KICTANet), in collaboration with Access Now, ARTICLE 19 Eastern and the Africa Center for Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law (CIPIT), considered the four regulations: 1. The Kenya Information and Communications (Broadcasting ) Regulations, 2022; 2. The Kenya Information and Communications (Registration of Telecommunications Service Subscribers) Regulations, 2022; 3. The Kenya Information and Communications (Access and Infrastructure Sharing) regulations; and, 4. The Kenya Information and Communications (Interconnection) Regulations 2022. We prepared a joint submission. The submission highlights key concerns with the regulations and makes key proposals to enrich the regulations. According to the WHO, Kenya needs close to one million units of blood every year. However, this target is rarely achieved, with the Kenya National Blood Transfusion Service ( <https://damu-sasa.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=eff43e0067c2bd794f33c3…> KNBTS) collecting approximately 30% of the optimal target. “The perennial problem calls for a systematic approach to understanding the dimensions of the causes of the poor response to donations,” said Dr Matunda Nyanchama, the Damu Sasa Executive Chairman. “Only then can there be an optimal solution to alleviate things in the current situation,” he added. The study is expected to benefit the healthcare industry with insights that could lead to innovative practices to boost blood donations and entrench a regular and voluntary donation culture. It will be carried out in 47 counties, and target public, private and mission-managed healthcare transfusion facilities, as well as the Kenyan public. The project underlines the IDRC’s commitment to supporting projects that have high impact potential on the lives of the people. On their part, Villgro Africa is committed to assisting start-ups whose work has high potential to benefit society in the continent and the rest of the world. In the past, Villgro Africa has supported Damu Sasa to build technology capabilities that enabled blood donations to continue even in the face of the COVID-19 Pandemic, specifically the physical distance requirements. Speaking at the project inauguration, the University of Nairobi’s Prof. Julius A. Ogeng'o, Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of academic affairs said, “there is a need for elevated collaboration between academic institutions and industry.” He added that the University of Nairobi, a regional leader in research and teaching, “has adequate and fully-qualified resources to support initiatives such as this one.” He took note of the multi-disciplinary composition of the team, saying that most problems in society today need such an approach of diverse expertise and experience. Storm over IEBC tech dry run failure rate

The civil society is concerned about the electoral agency’s preparedness to conduct the August 9 General Election. The concerns came after more than half of the polling stations identified for the testing of a new results transmission system (RTS) failed. Only 1,200 polling stations successfully transmitted data, out of the 2,900 selected for the system’s dry run.
