Dear Listers,
Today, February 8 2022, is Safer Internet Day. The theme this year is
“Together for a better internet”. The year marks the 19th edition of Safer
Internet Day which commemorates a day for stakeholders to come together to
bring attention and solidarity towards making the internet safer and better
place for all, and more so, for children and young people.
As part of our commitment to the day, KICTANet collaborated with the
Cybersecurity
Capacity Centre for Southern Africa (C3SA)
<http://www.c3sa.uct.ac.za/c3sa/about> and EBotho Cyberspa
<https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Nonprofit-Organization/EBotho-Digit…>
ce

and
participated in a webinar to promote cybersecurity awareness for civil
society organisations in sub-Saharan Africa.
The session highlighted the key cyber harms faced by civil society, the
state of digital rights and the key actions that civil society in the
region need to undertake to prevent threats and promote the realisation of
digital rights in the region.

Good day,
I have gotten a text from #Safaricom that reads:
Tired of promotional messages? Simply send an SMS to 100 to STOP Chargeable
> Services and Promotional messages
>
>From the ToS and contracts one signs on when registering a line, do they
mention you'll be used as a pinata for the marketing just like the assault
that are billboards with some even having flashing lights. Have these legal
documents been revised, if this wasn't present, just like what "internet"
applications do? Is this a tyranny of the default? Should it be this way?
I also haven't forgotten that #Safaricom wants to sell location data, the
American Telco style

Yours Kindly,
Adrian

Safaricom has a huge pricing power in voice services, making it difficult
for rivals Airtel Kenya and Telkom Kenya to compete with it, the
Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has said.
The regulator made the disclosure in its response to a case filed by
Safaricom at the Communications And Multimedia Appeals Tribunal seeking to
stop CA from cutting the mobile termination rate (MTR) per minute to Sh0.12
from Sh0.99.
MTRs are the charges levied by a mobile service provider on other
telecommunications service providers for terminating calls on its network.
Safaricom argues that the reduction of the charge, which was to take effect
at the start of this year, ignores the cost of doing business in the
telecommunications industry.
The regulator responded by stating that the leading telco has the lowest
cost of operations, allowing it to run promotions at prices below the MTR
and which its rivals are not in a position to match.
Safaricom’s leading market share has seen it charge its rivals more than it
pays out to them, leaving it in a net profitable position.
