Listers, This is indeed good news. We have a lot of hope in Mucheru and Victor Kyalo industry veterans who have indeed worked their way through the trenches. Most importantly we hope to see the return of a multi stakeholder form of engagement in the sector which we have been yearning for in a while. I think as a sector we might need to prepare a wish list for our new leaders and most importantly commit to work with them towards achieving their mandate. The reshuffle is timely still it comes at the end of the year and will allow us to start 2016 on a new slate. Listers, Picture this... You go to your favourite supermarket, BUY a packet of milk PAY for it then you realise you actually need more and you go back inside get a carton of milk and pay for it. As you now pack onto your trolley, the cashier picks the packet you earlier bought and tells you OUR POLICY IS THAT you only retain the 1 packet if you buy 1 packet, now that you bought a carton we have to take the 1 packet you earlier bought! OUTRAGEOUS don't you think? This is What AIRTEL ACTUALLY DOES! I have been on UNLIMINET 1000 for ages, had accumulated 30+GBs of data and due to my increased usage of calls decided to upgrade to UNLIMINET 2000. PAP all the 30+ GB were CONFISCATED as POLICY HAS IT that you only carry forward GBs on the same tariff! Mind you I HAD BOUGHT and accumulated the 30+ GBs... So very disappointed in AIRTEL, I used to believe they *WERE *the honest network (past tense!)! Thank you listers for the discussions so far. The discussion threads for Tuesday and Wednesday are still open. You can also send your questions by email to mwaragichanga(a)gmail.come and we will compile with those one the list. So far some of the questions we've had were about: 1. Why FB is applying is privacy policies differently across regions while they have similar data protection laws. 2. How Facebook is applying the general principles of data protection. 3. Concerns by people who have started seeing changes in the FB timelines and whatsapp. Has facebook started effecting these changes for those who accepted? (Question by Wangu and Barrack) 4. What do the new updates really entail? A lot has been said about the updates such that it is difficult to pinpoint the truth. FB can also break this down during the webinar. 5. Liz, Ali and Barrack, I would add that what I have seen from Facebook is that they "smelt blood in the water" during the pandemic. There is a bigger picture here. 1. Those of us who are “BBC" (Born Before Computers) can talk of walking away and life continues. But any urbanite born after Windows 95 does not have the “luxury”. The pandemic simply made digital interaction “essential" 2. Facebook has a collective “population” across their platforms of almost 3 billion. Let’s take 10% and assume these will do commerce on their platforms. That is a market the size of the USA or Europe north of the Alps or Nigeria combined with South Africa. 3. For developers, Facebook has introduced things like the Instagram Content Publishing API, which means "Instagram Business accounts can schedule and publish posts to their Instagram Feeds from third-party platforms.” Think integration with ERPs and CRMs. 4. And just like Microsoft and lately AWS, Facebook has created Facebook Developer certification so that one can be a technical expert in Facebook marketing products. <- A job right there that did not exist six months ago. Just keep in mind the market being addressed here. The train left the station, as Barrack said. The potential money the "post BBC” generation on FB and other platforms are likely to make, considering people like Elsa Majimbo, are too tantalising to turn away from. These are the choices this generation has. Either one starves in a country run by thieves or jumps onto the digital platforms and make a life for oneself. Elsa’s dad told her that this “Internet” thing is getting in the way of her studies, considering that she is quite smart. Guess how that conversation went ... Privacy, what privacy? Even if I say I want the contents of my emails to be “private” on Gmail, what I are really concerned about is how Google uses the access to my information in my InBox and how it “secures" it against leakage from "unauthorised” parties. Data “privacy” is concerned with "how data is shared with third parties.” What people are interested in is the security or protection of data, not privacy in the “private” sense. A vast majority on Facebook platforms are going nowhere. Apple is playing the same game here with their “hardware” platforms, just more subtle.
