Listers, This is indeed good news. We have a lot of hope in Mucheru and Victor Kyalo industry veterans who have indeed worked their way through the trenches. Most importantly we hope to see the return of a multi stakeholder form of engagement in the sector which we have been yearning for in a while. I think as a sector we might need to prepare a wish list for our new leaders and most importantly commit to work with them towards achieving their mandate. The reshuffle is timely still it comes at the end of the year and will allow us to start 2016 on a new slate. Jeipea! Thank you for these very good points. When I was at the iHub, I organised a regular lunch around HealthTech and we got a lot of insight that we would have given to SevenSeas for free, explaining the head winds they were going come into. The overall concept where the consumers(“consumed”) / working class / serfs / slaves have control on their lives and by extension the fortunes of the 1% is the stuff of Utopia and for UN “talks". It is not and will not be a reality for all of us. What these Finland, Estonia, Croatia and Slovakia have in common is an ethic (“national”) identity. Singapore is similar to Hong Kong in that it was a British Empire outpost that was too different to remain long as a province of Malaysia considering that it was predominantly Ethnic Chinese with the Malay people being about 14% of the population at that time. In fact, Singapore was kicked out of the Malaysia federation and had to become a country on its own. The other major factor is ideology. You will notice that Brexit is an English tribal conversation in the United Kingdom. The Scots are not for it. Inside England, the different parties are based on ideology of Haves and Have-nots. Thus, their ideologies are based on class and these can be discussed within an ethnic paradigm. Almost all African countries cannot count these factors as part of their socio-political make up. Most African countries are multi-ethnic political states that have no socio-economic reasons for existence, unlike Singapore as an example. Kenya is a classic case, like the US of A where an amorphous state of ethnic mixes that are being economically "shaken down" and stratified into economic classes, the Haves and the Have-nots. Kenya has a neo-colonial class of imperial collaborators and the US has a class of global merchants as the Haves. What we need to look at is the history that brought these countries to this point of human development clarity. We, in Africa have not yet seen the kind of wars most Europeans have undergone in the past. We have a some ways to go before we collectively get “angry” enough to do something about our current condition. The fact that politics is objectified as a game is interesting since those Have-nots are the field on which the elephants “play" on. The fact that it is sold like that is the work of the Media, the “Fourth” Estate. Estate of what? So for us to have systems that allow the general population to control who has access to his or her data on any level, health included, is going to be fought by whatever 1% overlords the populace has. But we are not clear, ideologically, on WHY we want the freedom to control our individual data. Privacy is not the issue. That is a red herring. Vodafone snubs Libra in favour of growing M-Pesa digital money

Vodafone has withdrawn from Facebook’s digital currency initiative Libra, as regulators and bureaucrats circle overhead. While Facebook might have become accustomed to sitting in the regulatory spotlight, it seems other companies are not as accepting of the attention. In an increasing tsunami of regulatory scrutiny, Vodafone has become the latest company to withdraw from the Libra initiative, joining the likes of Paypal and Mastercard. “Vodafone Group has decided to withdraw from the Libra Association,” a Vodafone spokesperson said. “We have said from the outset that Vodafone’s desire is to make a genuine contribution to extending financial inclusion. We remain fully committed to that goal and feel that we can make the most contribution by focusing our efforts on M-Pesa. MPESA 'Hakikisha' Privacy Issues

In 2020, Safaricom should do something about the data privacy concerns raised in various fora. I think one of the most controversial features that was introduced in 2019 was Hakikisha. Touted as a way to reduce money sent to the wrong recipients, it has become a major headache for those who are conscious about privacy of personal data. It is a good thing that you can only 'hakikisha' upto 5 times per day. However, this limit does not seem to work on mySafaricom app. The basic argument is that just because I need to send you money, you don't have to know my full names as they appear on ID. Secondly, this service has been abused by fraudsters multiple times to access personal data that they should otherwise have not access to. The lack of a limit on MySafaricom App means that a fraudster can guess random Safaricom numbers and get their full names as they appear on ID many many times in a day. The problem is that Safaricom does not seem to do anything about all the concerns raised from different quarters about the Hakikisha feature. One viable recommendation has been to give each MPESA user a unique 'SafaricomID'. This ID, whether numeric or alphanumeric, *should be displayed* when sending or receiving money via MPESA. In the Safaricom registry, this ID should mirror all the users legal data and can be easily accessed by an authorized person if an issue/crime/money-sent-to-the-wrong-person-case comes up. This simple action will cut down the fraudsters who propagate their business via mobile money by at least half. If you look at it deeply, I think it is your problem if you are not diligent enough and send money to a wrong number. You simply tell MPESA what to do just like you fill a transaction advice at a bank. You can't blame the teller if you missed a digit when writing the account number and the money ended in the wrong account. Your phone number has now become a virtual nametag which you wear waiting for whoever cares, even strangers, to read your full names. Data protection laws should be in force and with a strong regulator in place before the rollout of any national biometric ID project. National ID systems should also be technically auditable by independent actors to ensure trust and security. > Openness as in inclusion: Governments must place equal emphasis on ensuring individuals are not denied essential services simply because they lack that particular ID or because the system didn’t work, as well as ensuring individuals have the ability to opt-out of certain uses of their ID. This is particularly vital for those marginalised in society who might feel the most at risk of profiling and will value the ability to restrict the sharing of information across contexts. > Openness as in participation: Governments must conduct wide-ranging consultation on the technical, legal, and policy choices involved in the ID systems right from the design stage of the project. Clearview is one such company selling your face. There are several others in the pipeline. Governments really do not need to implement all the surveillance themselves, it's all going to be available commercially. I am now waiting for the day when the database of 3Bn identities gets hacked and we end up with massive identity fraud. Plus all the other Armageddon scenarios around this kind of database being used. I can also foresee apps and web sites for trackmygirlfriend.com and trackmyemployee.com and the more horrific namethatchild.com which pedofiles will like. Of course, none of this has been deemed to be in the Internet Society's Remit for 2020, so I'm probably sending this to the wrong forum. Let's get back to bashing the PIR sale sandbox. Question: - Is this morally right that two companies can trade information (Private) for jobs? - Does it mean that this company literally buying private information about its employees to guarantee their retention?

But it wasn’t just any piece of digital property. The deal was met with a fierce backlash. The goal of the group is not only to persuade the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which oversees internet domain names, to stop the sale. It is also to persuade ICANN to hand it the management of dot-org instead. “This is a better alternative,” said Esther Dyson, who served as the first chair of ICANN, from 1998 to 2000, and is one of seven directors of the new cooperative. “If you’re owned by private equity, your incentive is to make a profit.
