@Safaricom My concern (though already mentioned by one of the listers) is privacy and data protection. In 2013, a political party in my area colluded with M-Pesa agents to phish customer details from M-Pesa registers for political purposes.As a result, my details and those of others ended up with the party, and were eventually forwarded to the registrar of political parties. 1. What mechanisms have you put in place to protect customers data especially at the agents level?2. Can you compare notes with your sister company in Tanzania (Vodacom) to borrow some of their best practices in handling customer data? The other issues is Internet cost. Tanzania has been voted as the #1 country with affordable Internet costs in Africa (again Vodacom takes the lead).With about 150 Kshs, you get 1GB for 24 hours. Why is it so hard for you to pass such benefits to Kenyans after years of dominance? Listers Another one bites the dust? I'm really curious as to whats going on in the Telco sector. Bharti Airtel has announced that it will be exiting 14 African countries within a year. The affected countries include: Chad, Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. The telecom operator is faced with poor performance across those markets. Two years ago, when Airtel began talks to sell off its operations in Burkina Faso, Chad, Congo Brazzaville and Sierra Leone to Orange <http://mobilityarena.com/airtel-not-exiting-africa-despite-talks-to-sell-4-…>, the company had stated that it wouldn’t be exiting Africa. Talk to Safaricom!

Good morning Listers Now, the question of Safaricom has been raised on this list many times including in the latest _Airtel exiting Africa_ debate. We have been speaking with Steve Chege, the ‎Director Corporate Affairs at Safaricom on the need to provide information/ answers to some of the issues that have been raised, and in particular those that are raised over and over again. He is agreeable and positive on the need to provide information so that we stop speculating or sometimes draw conclusions which may not necessarily be correct. KICTANet will this year endeavor to engage with your operators and we are glad to announce that Safaricom has agreed to take this up. Steve, together with his team will field your questions. We also hope to hold a cocktail at a date to be announced later, where Safaricom will further respond to questions that you will deem not answered. This is the plan: Walu will moderate the debate for five days starting Monday next week February 6, 2017. Accordingly, he will provide us with the program tomorrow. Once the debate is over, he will hand over to Steve and team, who will in turn provide comprehensive answers. About the Position The Sub Saharan Africa Policy Analyst will be an Access Now team member based in Sub Saharan Africa and will lead the organisation’s public policy and advocacy work in the region. Desired Qualifications · Degree in law, computer science, political science, public policy, international relations, or a similar field; · Solid understanding and interest in human rights, public policy, technology, and public organising in the Sub Saharan African region with a deeper knowledge in at least one of these areas; · Able to bridge the gap between policy and technology (technical background a plus); · Preference for previous work in the areas of internet freedom, internet governance, business and human rights, legal education, political communication, internet engineering, and/or new technologies, with increasing levels of responsibility; · Comfort with remote team and manager relationships, with corresponding ability to ensure self driven organisation, prioritisation, and proactive communication of work; · Experience engaging and supporting diverse communities including women, LGBTQI or queer communities; · Excellent communication and management skills, and proven ability to manage teams and projects in the public policy, political, or public affairs spheres; · Global perspective and ability to participate in a team with people from around the world; · Experience working in a grassroots organisation with member activists is a plus; · Ability to organise and facilitate events, workshops, and small meetings; · Fluency in English is required, and knowledge of French and local languages in the region is a strong plus.
