Kenya's *future* Data Protection act should require *Kenyan* IT authorities to vet/investigate foreign software/services.. Our laws including the constitution mention "the national interest". https://www.cnet.com/news/kaspersky-lab-russian-hacking-us-government-natio… Yep, there's more. The Wall Street Journal reported on Oct. 5 that Russians had used Kaspersky's software to steal NSA secrets <https://www.wsj.com/articles/russian-hackers-stole-nsa-data-on-u-s-cyber-de…> from a staffer's home laptop. In 2015, the antivirus scanner picked up the NSA's hacking tools, which landed in the Kremlin's hands, according to the report. And then on Oct. 10, The New York Times reported that Israeli intelligence caught Russian hackers looking for secret files <https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/10/technology/kaspersky-lab-israel-russia-h…> in real time using Kaspersky Lab's antivirus software. The software had become an advanced search engine for Russian hackers to steal data, the Times reported. CyberScoop also reported on the same day <https://www.cyberscoop.com/kaspersky-fbi-cia-fsb-demarche-2015/> that Kaspersky Lab and the US government had a tense confrontation in 2015 after the security company boasted to FBI agents during a sales pitch that the software could be used as a tool for spying on terrorists. What This Team Will Do Work Track 5 will focus on developing proposed recommendations regarding the treatment of geographic names at the top-level. How This Team Will Work ICANN WGs use transparent, open processes. The meetings of this Work Track will be recorded, transcribed, and the recordings will be made available to the public. The mailing list for the Work Track will be archived publicly. Members are expected to provide essential input to the process, orally or through written input. Next Steps The call for volunteers will be circulated as widely as possible in order to ensure broad representation and participation in Work Track 5. Members who join the Work Track after work has begun will be responsible for reviewing all Work Track deliberations, agreements, and documents so that they are prepared to participate fully. Regular online meetings will be scheduled in accordance with the Work Track's work plan, which it is expected to develop as one of its first tasks. Drafting of WT5 Terms of Reference is currently underway with the WT leadership and will be finalized in the near future. Background In 2005, the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) began a Policy Development Process (PDP) to consider the introduction of new gTLDs. The two-year PDP process resulted in a set of 19 GNSO policy recommendations for implementing new gTLDs. In order to implement the policy recommendations of the GNSO, a number of draft Applicant Guidebooks (AGBs) were developed by ICANN staff in consultation with the community. In June 2011, ICANN's Board of Directors approved the final AGB and authorized the launch of the New gTLD Program. The New gTLD Program application window opened on 12 January 2012 and a total of 1930 complete applications were received. The first set of Initial Evaluation results were released on 22 March 2013, followed by the first set of new gTLD delegations on 21 October 2013. All applications have now completed the evaluation process and as of mid October 2017, there are over 1,200 gTLDs delegated. Although the 2012 round is ongoing, efforts to examine the round have already begun, which included the initiation of the GNSO's PDP on New gTLD Subsequent Procedures in early 2016. Besides, the European commission is seeking to give police greater powers to decrypt private messages as part of a wider proposal to crackdown on criminals. On Artificial intelligence, "A robot named Sophia was a panelist at a United Nations meeting Wednesday to demonstrate how artificial intelligence could help the organization move faster in facilitating progress and development across the globe". On taxation; France's President Emmanuel Macron made progress on his push to make companies like Amazon pay taxes where they make profits, and not in tax havens as European Union leaders said on Thursday they looked forward to seeing proposals on taxing online giants by early 2018. On cybersecurity, North Korea has dominated the headlines in recent weeks, as international tension climbs over the country’s nuclear aspirations and capabilities. Furthemore, Security researchers Mathy Vanhoef and Frank Piessens have detected a major vulnerability in the WPA2 protocol that secures all protected Wi-Fi networks. On digital rights, dozens of influential civil rights groups have called on EU decision-makers to abandon proposals for compulsory proactive copyright filters. Their open letter, addressed to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and colleagues, warns that monitoring citizens' Internet traffic would restrict fundamental rights while running counter to the Electronic Commerce Directive. Listers, The Internet Freedom Festival (IFF) just opened its call for proposals. As someone who has attended this event in the past, I think you would really love the IFF experience. You get to meet amazing, passionate people from around the world and learn important skills. Also, through their Diversity and Inclusion Fund, they will fund presenters from the Global South and underrepresented regions can receive travel funding. You can apply to be a speaker and request for travel assistance here: https://platform.internetfreedomfestival.org A bit of background: The IFF takes place every year in Valencia, Spain. It is considered one of the largest and most diverse inclusive gatherings in the Internet Freedom space. It brings together over 1000 people from +100 countries, to join forces against online censorship and surveillance. People in attendance includes activists, technologists, digital security trainers, journalists, designers, policy advocates, and much more. The goal of this one-of-a-kind gathering is to allow people to share knowledge and resources, and collectively improve the services, strategies, and tools offered to individuals on the frontlines.
