Listers We are entering a new dangerous phase of threats to Internet Freedoms and privacy due in part to the rise in Terror and Governments increasing ineptitude to safeguard its citizens. We are often faced with options of either:- 1. Surrender your privacy and freedoms online OR 2. Risk terror attacks. The big question we all ask today is this:- Can Governments worldwide safeguard freedoms and privacy while at the same time fight terrorism effectively ? Excerpts form this interesting New York Times article:- By then it was clear that tools for digital burglary had spread well beyond the hands of regular police officers. Comey (FBI DIrector) had argued for weaker safes; Vincenzetti (CEO of Hacker Team) was selling longer crowbars. They could be used to chase Jimmy Page, arrest Chapo Guzman, fight crime, smear a political opponent or just keep tabs on someone, anyone. To be hidden is to be a terrorist (emphasis mine) — this was the heart of his pitch. Emmanuel Good points. I'm sure the banking sector has considered this. Fact is this:- The money circulating in the banking sector is less than 30% of liquidity in Africa. I believe the regulator needs to relook at its mandate and focus on the bigger picture.. Besides, I'm sure the banks have considered that risk and found it worth it.. Bwana PS Kyalo The above refers. Could you kindly update us on the way forward regarding the 2016 ICT Policy? We would like to know how the community can help further and when the Policy will be become a 'live' document so we can be able to delve into it and extract the gems that lie therein. We would also like to know how the multi-stakeholder engagement benefited the development of the Policy, what was added, removed and the criteria used to do so. Of course we are also keen to see the final document. Thank you and looking forward to your response. Kudos for this. We (ICT practitioners) were certainly being turned into some laughing stock for some of the sentiments that were expressed ostensibly by ICT experts, including our own CS (my friend Joe) who to say the least either for lack of clarity or otherwise chose to express himself unfaithful to his calling and training. Washington Odhiambo was spot-on in his comments a couple of days ago. Some of us submitted memoranda to the elections ICT working group and expressed very similar sentiments. Like I said last time as a postmortem to the last general elections; Technology didn't fail us, it is people who failed us......enough said. An excerpt from the story in the Business Daily:- The Business Daily has learned that KBA member banks submitted their product and system proposals to the CBK in July ahead of the planned August launch date, seeking approvals. Such authorisations, which are ordinarily issued after a maximum of one month, are however yet to be issued, delaying the launch of a product that promises to revolutionise the financial services sector.
