Regulator sets new digital TV deadline

Viewers in Nairobi have until the end of this year to migrate to the digital platform or they will not be able to watch TV.This is after the government set December 31 as the last day when analogue signals will be used in Nairobi and its environs, commencing the first phase of the switch to digital television. Firstly, I'll state I'm an interested party, being part of Angani. We have reached a high level of maturity when it comes to both datacenter infrastructure and operations and hosting/cloud infrastructure 1) Datacenter infrastructure and operations - Angani currently has two sites. One is with East Africa Datacenter, which is the first Tier 3 datacenter in this region. We've never had any power outage/network outage since moving into this facility. 2) Cloud Infrastructure - the expertise for this exists, in Kenya. We, as a team have experience in building and maintaining critical systems. Given that we have two availability zones, it's possible to have your application replicated between two sites. We've come a long way. Angani has been in operation effectively for the last 11 months and in that time we've moved from having to convince customers to trust our platform to managing over 12,000 email accounts. We are now one of the larger hosting providers in Kenya http://myip.ms/view/countries/KEN/Internet_Usage_Statistics_Kenya.html. This is within 11 months (we came out of beta late December 2013). Why am I giving these stats? Times have changed, the local private sector sees this and has chosen to trust us with their information. I hope you have seen this report. Africarepresents the fastest growing mobile subscriber region in the world. It is expectedto continue growing at an annual compound rate of 7%. It is expected that there will be about 525million unique subscribers in the year 2020. This will be approximately 49% of the population of the region. Actualmobile connections are projected to be 975 million. the mobile industry is expected to contribute up to 6.2% of the region’s gross domestic product (GDP) or US$104 billion by 2020. The figures for 2013 are 5.4% and US$75 billion for GDP contribution. It is projected that between 2014 and 2020 operators will inject a total of US$97 billion to cope with projected growth. It is projected that 40% of all mobile devices will be smartphones by year 2020 compared to 5.1% in 2013. The full report is attached.. Hi All, Wanted to pass a thumbs up to the ICT Authority Team, i used the eCitizen portal to apply for a duplicate DL recently. All worked out very well. Thumbs up to the Pesapal team, that payment went very well! NTSA customer service was great. Times tower 3rd Floor team was bit slow, i forgive them as i got our old paper booklet DL version for the replacement. I did not leave my desk to have these going which was even greater! My messenger collected the DL painlessly too. Kudos to all behind the work. True that Adam, Monopolies are not necessarily bad since they can ensure a consolidated market to justify investments. HOWEVER "Private monopolies" rather than "Public monopolies" is a different ball game altogether. From my limited travels into the developed North, most (the bulk) of their transport system is under the Public Metropolitan/County government - with room for private sector intervention and innovations. In Kenya we seem to have got it upside down. Private sector single handedly runs our public transport system - and you can see where this landed us. I miss the days when I was just 10years old and was allowed to use the Public transport aka Kenya Bus Service in 1980s to go alone to public primary school (now @MbuguaNjihia has confirmed am ancient :-) Indeed I am quite suprised by the loud silence from the Nairobi County government. Perhaps they are also lost in terms of how, where, when and if they could get involved in this cashless payment system. The workshop which will be hosted by Lesotho Communications Authority, will be held from 10th – 14th November 2014.
