Update on the switch off of unregistered SIM cards

Listers, More than 2.4 million unregistered SIM cards switched off The four local mobile operators have to date switched off more than 2.4 million unregistered SIM cards. According to statistics gathered from mobile operators, a total of 2,408,266 unregistered mobile lines had, by January 8, been switched off, barely a week after the expiry of the December 31 deadline. Safaricom has disconnected a total of 1.2 million unregistered SIM cards. Orange and Airtel have disconnected 520,000 and 365,266 unregistered lines, respectively. YuMobile on the other hand has switched off 323,000 SIM cards. Subscribers whose lines have been switched off have up to 90 days to register their SIM cards, failing which their mobile numbers will be withdrawn permanently and subsequently reassigned to new users. Much as there have been oppositions to the switch over it will be encouraging to see that sections of the city have the systems actually tested in order to prepare for any challenges as is normal with any new tech- switch. If other countries are already sampling the technology then its time we hit the ground running too, there are always repercussions of being left behind when the bell rings. The Africa strategy which was presented in Toronto (ICANN 45) has now entered its implementation phase with the adoption of an action plan covering the rest of ICANN's fiscal year (FY13) ending on June 2013. The action plan derived from the Africa strategy, will help implement a series of seven (7) priority projects , including ICANN's further engagement with I*, particularly the African Internet related Organizations and businesses, an all Africa workshop on the DNS industry, a DNSSEC roadshow, the ICANN academy, the ambassador programme , the incubator programme for DNS industry and business development. The latter will be launched in July 2013 (FY14), together with another series of projects. Implementation of the work plan will require strategic partnerships with other institutions active in the field , and will rely on African and foreign expertise. Internet Society Seeks Nominees to Join Other Historic Figures in Internet Hall of Fame Nominations Submission Deadline February 18 [Washington, D.C. and Geneva, Switzerland – 10 January 2013] – The Internet Society today announced that nominations for the second annual Internet Hall of Fame will be accepted January 11 through February 18, 2013. The nomination form will be available on the Internet Hall of Fame website, http://www.internethalloffame.org/nominations. Individuals who have played a significant role in the conceptualization, building, and development of the Internet in any region or country are considered for induction each year into one of the three categories of the Internet Hall of Fame: * Pioneers: recognizing individuals instrumental in the early design and development of the Internet. * Innovators: recognizing individuals who made outstanding technological, commercial, regulatory, or policy advances and helped to expand the Internet’s reach. * Global Connectors: recognizing individuals who have made major contributions to the growth, connectivity, and use of the Internet, either on a global scale or within a specific region or community. In addition to those who have been more visible, the Internet Hall of Fame seeks nominees who have made crucial, behind-the-scenes contributions. The target audience includes senior and mid-level technical staff of commercial Internet Service providers (ISPs), academic networks, government networks, or NGO networks. AfNOG conferences provide a forum for the coordination and dissemination of technical information related to backbone/enterprise networking technologies and operational practices. The meetings are informal, with an emphasis on relevance to current and future African backbone engineering practices. The AfNOG 2012 conference in Serekunda, Gambia drew over 206 participants, mainly consisting of network engineering staff from national service providers, and members of the research and education community. Google just provided a good analytical hub for the Kenyan electorate: Interesting -The Internet is playing increasingly an important role in transforming the way citizens participate and engage in the elections across Africa. Now its Kenya’s turn, and expectations are high both for a peaceful transition and a deepening of democracy under the new constitution.
