ISOC community grants

The Internet Society will be accepting applications for the November 2012 round of the Community Grants Programme from 09 August to 10 September 2012, (note that applications will close at the end of the day, midnight PDT (-7 UTC) on 10 September). Award decisions will be made in early November. To prepare for this application round, we will be holding two information sessions via WebEx on Thursday, 2 August at 1030 and 2000 UTC. Those participating in a conference call are urged to read over the programme webpages in advance of the meeting. **New to the programme** Letters of Support are Mandatory: Beginning this round, the Community Grant Programme will require at least one letter of support to be uploaded to your application. The support letter(s) should acknowledge the support from the various stakeholders engaged in the project, whether “in kind” or cash donations. Any support for your project that is more than US$500 should be validated with a support letter and establishes your project partners’ willingness to support your initiative and their engagement toward fulfilling your project’s goals. **Good to know ** The Internet Society will continue using the Zoomgrants web-based application to receive your Community Grants Programme proposals. We highly recommend you consult the online tutorial before applying. The current, preferred Focus Areas for project applications remain: • IPv6 • Local content creation (encouraging demand for and use of the Internet for a specific community) • Encouraging the multi-stakeholder approach to technical and policy issues • Interconnection and traffic exchange It is important to note, that the above Focus Areas may provide direction in formulating project ideas. These are preferences only, so other project topics can be accepted as well. InternetNZ offers $100, 000 in grants for internet research

Best Alice ---------------------- Latest funding round is for projects that explore the ³intersect of the internet and public policy or law² InternetNZ is offering $100,000 for policy and legal-related research projects, with a funding cap of $20,000 per project. InternetNZ, which last year received $7.15 million in domain name fees <http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/news/internetnz-collects-715-million-i n-registry-fees-in-last-financial-year>, has a $500,000 annual budget for community funding. Internet NZ CEO Vikram Kumar says the latest funding round is for research projects ³that explore the intersect of the internet and public policy or law.² For example, this could include projects that explore policy around access to the internet for economically poor communities or an analysis of reference to key internet terms (such as Internet Service Provider) in New Zealand legislation. The funding round will be overseen by InternetNZ¹s grant committee, with advice from internet policy specialist Ellen Strickland, from the University of Queensland and Graeme Crombie, a partner at law firm Minter Ellison Rudd Watts.

While on this subject, I am wondering whether the case (at least at the leadership and management levels) about the high cost of poorly built & maintained roads. I read (back in time) a world bank study that suggested that every unit spent on maintaining roads saves between 3 and 4 units of the same; thus every shilling (in labour + material) invested in maintenance yields savings of 3~4 shillings in vehicle maintenance, lost time, etc. Kenya is NOT poor, but wasteful of resources; and perhaps poor at translating ideas into implementation.
