The workshop has been organised by a group of alumni of the ISOC Next Generation Leaders Programme under the mentorship of the Internet Society and will focus on the tension between the fundamental intellectual property rights – notably, copyright – and “the more liberal freedom to share, which is a unique attribute of the emerging information society and represents the quintessence of the right to receive and impart information and ideas”. The purpose of the workshop is to trigger a dynamic discussion between the attendees and the panellists in order to analyse the different nuances of the issues at stake. For this reason, we welcome the participation of the audience, be it on-site or remote. Knowing that many members of this list are truly passionate about IPR issues, we urge you to join our debate and share with us your standpoint. Grants Available for ICT-based Projects!The Swedish organization SPIDER offers catalytic seed funding to innovative ICT4D projects in partner countries, within their thematic areas and crosscutting ICT4D priorities. Innovative and experimental projects are encouraged, along with strategic interventions in specific areas. Projects that generate good results are expected to be upscaled. SPIDER’s thematic areas: democracy: e-government, e-governance and ICT for empowerment; education: education management, e-learning and digital literacy; and health: healthcare management, e-health and public health. They work on cross-cutting ICT issues such as low cost and high quality technology, free and open source software (FOSS) and mobile technology for development (M4D). Their main focus in terms of development issues is in youth empowerment, cultural creativity, and capacity development. SPIDER works primarily with twelve priority countries for Swedish development cooperation: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. Organizations from partner countries can apply for funding at any time, by submitting a concept note. On some occasions, SPIDER will also announce open calls for applications on specific areas of interest. Organisations that receive a positive review of their concept note are expected to spend at least 2-4 months preparing their full proposals. Proposals that are accepted will receive catalytic short-term support (1-2 years). The media has been blamed many times by politicians for ‘misquoting’ them yet in many instances there is video footage to confirm that the politicians did indeed say certain things. Dear Listers, As per its TORs, the ASWG submitted its draft outline of the ICANN Strategic plan for Africa on 1st October. The ASWG thanks all those who offered their comments and contributions; we did receive substantive contributions which have helped develop the initial draft. Comments have been posted alongside all the working documents developed by the Group at http://www.afrinic.net/en/community/icann-aswg/tor. ICANN thus takes it from here. A presentation of this initial plan is scheduled for tomorrow , Monday at 15 - 16h30, room Metro Center, at ICANN 45 in Toronto. ICANN will then continue the outreach and public presentation until the document evolves into a full Action plan for Africa in the next three years..There is thus still room for contributing to this work in progress. Very good discussions on this topic. 1. No country has developed where the NGO sector (the true lords of poverty) dominate! Most NGO execs are always focused on their next fundraiser, the driving cause, their jobs, and (often) international travel. 2. The Hyacinth problem in Lake Victoria needs a comprehensive solution than just harvesting. Fertilizer use in the catchment area, coupled with poor forest cover allowing for excessive surface runoff, dense population without the equivalent of sewage disposal (Kisii for instance is a giant municipality - just check how densely populated), etc may need to be considered. 3. As for our education system it needs radical reform if ever it is intended to realize the nation's aspirations (which ones are they by the way?). We are certificate driven and do anything to get that piece of paper as if this is a substitute for knowledge and skill. Thus students cheat consistently to get the paper. Even those that pass rightfully, many do so via rote learning, which perhaps evaporates as soon as examinations are over! And our universities, some with classes atop bars, dance halls and brothels! ... something BIG is missing in addition that our school system has failed to help shape what the country should be and values thereof; thus we have tribes this and tribes that ... Listers "*Hyacinth has been found to be a good ingredient for organic fertilizer.*" I will quote Ps. Ndemo !!! And again not once, not twice have we seen the media cover individuals who have attempted to create paper out of the mashed Hyacinth, well the process was certainly long but the end product is very beautiful, home made cards. For me perhaps we only remember Mau Forest and others when the issue of paper comes up, Pan Paper has not performed well, Polythene bags are polluting our country and by extension agriculture is affected, why not use the idea of making hyacinth paper bags that we could use in supermarkets and grocery shops and probably eliminate these non bio degradable bags ? I think we can agree that instead of crying over Hyacinth that has taken over the freshest lake in the world, we could harness the weed and generate animal feed , paper , furniture , bio gas and many more. Someone just needs to start commercializing it. Probably we could have government buy the first batch of hyacinth furniture and yes others would follow suit.
