Dear Listers, Africa Top Level Domains Organization (AfTLD) in collaboration with the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA), hosted the 6th annual ccTLD event in Livingstone (Zambia) in July 2012 the theme being Enhancing Internet Management in Africa. While presiding over the opening ceremony the Minister of Transport, Works Supply and communications urged delegates to ensure that the Internet is readily accessible and manageable to the ordinary person in an African village, in addition he emphasised on the need to curb the digital divide between urban and rural areas and the high cost of Internet services in African countries. The meeting focused on enhancing the visibility of African ccTLDs through branding and marketing, examining the likely impact of new gTLDs on African ccTLDS as well enhancing the robustness and efficiency of African registries by improving technical infrastructure. The meeting was in line with AfTLD’s strategic objective of building capacity of African ccTLDs with an aim of improving and enhancing Africa’s internet infrastructure. During the meeting Mr. Vika Mpisane (.ZA) stepped down as AfTLD Chairman, Mrs. Mary Uduma (.NG ) and Mr. Eric Akumiah (.GH) were elected as members of the Executive Committee. It has inked an agreement to sell 75 per cent of its interest in Altech West Africa. KBS sticker is not a proof KEBS certification. Downtown in Nairobi you can get any sticker (KEBS, KRA etc) for a song. In my opinion the buck stops with both CCK and KEBS. CCK is mandated to type approve telcom equipments and uses KEBS as an agency to do this. On the other hand KEBS is mandated to ensure that all product sold to consumers meet certain standards. CCK can use another agency if it feels KEBS is not doing a good job. At the same time KEBS can reject any CCK type approved telco product if it is harmful to consumers. ------Original message------ From: S.M. Listers, What solutions exist in the industry for "bulk" emergency alerts to a large group of people especially sms-based solutions (without having to type or select contacts one by one)? Is it bulk sms service (which I think is too expensive)? Or are there other cheaper options? Pls share some ideas directly. Edith

Hello Listers, I have received and decided to share this security alert. Although unverified (by myself), it looks quite practical in it's execution. If it hasn't happened, I have all reason to believe this can happen, so be on the RED ALERT. ** ** *Better safe than sorry* *. Be on the look out!* **** **** In a city where crime takes different shapes everyday, the monster radio sought out to find out whats really happening in Nairobi. Over the past few months residents in the up market estates (Kileleshwa, Lavington, Kilimani and Westlands) have been complaining of frequent attacks from armed robbers who are riding on motorbikes. Get this right, not tuk tuk motorbikes but strong heavy CC motorbikes; what we call “Hondaa” in slang. The police and victims have identified the robbers as two or three young guys who ride on the same bike and are armed and dangerous. they mostly attack female pedestrians but now are also targeting males and motorists too. they are upmarket and are well kept so you may never have the slight idea of whom they really are. the mastermind in the clique is a skinny dark skin tall guy and the bike rider is chubby and short. the third robber is always in the shadows but is equally dangerous said a female victim whose identity we are withholding for security reasons. last night September 13th, they orchestrated six crimes from 7pm to 11pm within Adams arcade, Hurlingham, Jabavu lane which is just outside Kilimani Police station and Brookside, all of which they robbed victims at gun point and seriously hurt them as well. The robbers take all sorts of valuables i.e, cellphones, watches, rings,gadgets etc and resell them in the black market.Currently the Kilimani area and Kileleshwa police departments are on high alert with police patrols deployed all over the yaya and valley arcade areas. Through HR&A our Master Developer at Konza we met two agencies today in New York involved with the development of a futuristic New York that will be competitive in the next 50 years. Hudson Yards Development Corporation was created by Mayor Bloomberg to redevelop a section of New York that was their industrial area. It covers approximately 300 acres with mostly non high rise buildings. The city now wants high rises to meet future office demands. Here they are buying back most of the land while developing modern infrastructure including the subway. Consultants are working day and night to ensure the redeveloped area meets current and future needs. Later we visited the New York City Development Corporation charged with NY's future competitiveness. They noted that in 1890, NY wad basically a trading centre. In the 1940s, it became an Industrial City and today it is largely a financial and services city. They now want to switch gears to a more technology city. Through a competitive process, they have put together a number of universities to deliberately steer NY into another Silicon Valley. Cornell University is paired with Israel Institute of Technology to deliberately create multi disciplinary programs in applied sciences and entrepreneurship. NY University too will partner with other global centres of excellence such as Indian Institute of Technology to also focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. To help create a competitive future, the city will give free land and other incentives. They are demolishing one of the hospitals in order to create space for a futuristic project. Each of the different university grouping will focus in a specialized area that will be critical in the days to come. They are coming up with courses like health analytics, smart cities etc. This is how in future we can use data to predict our future. This is very critical and many lessons for developing countries. As we continue to do things the same way it has always been done, things remain the same and this ain't good at all. We need to leverage on what we have and do a little more. In the evening I attended a UN sponsored launch of Better than Cash Alliance at the Ford Foundation. Here speaker after speaker lauded Kenya for its contribution towards mobile money. Our own Michael Joseph was in attendance. This was a launch to scale up what has been successful in Kenya (75% of mobile money transactions world wide happens in Kenya). We shall see many researchers coming to Kenya. We must move up the ladder through research and begin to lead the rest of the world. Instead of spending many hours arguing the merits and demerits of SAP training some Kenyans we need a mobile payroll system that can be integrated with Government's Integrated Financial Management System. When Matatus were introduced, there was a regulated transport system in Kenya. Buses could not just stop anywhere. They were like the proprietary software. Mini buses could stop anywhere and charged based on distance travelled and eventually dealt a blow to buses in urban centres. The rest today is history. That is ok for now. Ndemo. One is already required by law to register SIM cards, so CCK had better come clean over thisThe Kenya Bureau of Standards is unable to detect fake phones and relies heavily on mobile phone manufacturers, according to the Business Daily. Ladies and gentlemen, Kenya is facing a plague of regulatory bodies receiving assistance from those they are meant to police.Already, two companies associated with phone manufacturers have materialised to recycle dead phones. Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Centre Limited is working in tandem with Samsung to recycle counterfeit phones, which will now be classified as e-waste.Nokia has a recycling drop-off point for unloved phones. Both operations recycle phones regardless of whether they are genuine or counterfeit.
