Hello world, is there a way to make/force Airtel to deliver my txt msgs and give me a delivery report? I've complained to them, to CCK, but no solution!! Well, perhaps it's easy to just stop using them but feels defeatist, because me thinks they have an obligation to deliver, unless the license terms say theirs is a 'best effort' service. Here are the highlights: - He is in Paris and has been for some time. He's being treated at the American Hospital for a malignancy of the stomach and intestine. (We did not go into detail.) According to Tarek, his doctor gives him a very good prognosis for beating the disease. - He is living at an apartment hotel in Paris, connected to the Egyptian embassy. - His wife is with him in Paris, and his children are with his wife's parents in Egypt. - He is interested in resuming a professional career, most probably in the international sphere, and he is beginning to put out feelers and to re-establish his professional network. Some of us, or course, are a part of that network. I told him that he has many friends internationally, here in this group as well as elsewhere, and that he could count on whatever help we could give him. - Depending upon his medical condition, he talked about possibly visiting the United States (Washington, New York, maybe elsewhere) at the end of summer or early fall. - He now has a new e-mail address, independent of the Egyptian government: "Tarek Kamel" <tmkamel(a)gmail.com> I encourage you to write to him. - He has a mobile phone number: +33 6 26 48 78 35. When I talked with him, he seemed somewhat tired, but his spirits were good, and he enjoyed the contact. When he is in the hospital for treatment he probably doesn't have access to his phone very much; in the U.S. the use of mobile phones is restricted when around any significant medical instrumentation. I hope that as a group, we have sufficient imagination, knowledge, contacts, and perseverance to help him to secure a really good position in which he can be effective, one that he richly deserves. Planning Digital Villages Visit

Dear colleagues. I now have a list of Safaricom villages and also Pasha villages. Safaricom has asked me as a courtesy to meet with them before I venture out. So I will do that. I have a conference I have to attend in Nairobi from July 25th until August 6th. I would like to take the second week of August to go visit as many villages as I can afford to. Does anyone have a preference regarding visiting Safaricom or Pasha? I guess that in theory, we could visit both in the same county. I have heard from two people who are seriously interested in coming with me. If it is only two, I will just rent a car, not a safari van. Again, it would be helpful, if you could pitch in 500 shillings for the gas, but it is not required. I know that the economy is tight right now. What are the core system and hosting requirements of the Open Data Inititative?

--For those involved in the end user data creation creativity, please ignore this thread as the system is operational therefore this thread does not affect you-- If KICBT could respond, it would be help establish some parameters of this project. As a matter of national interest to all Kenyan Software Developer Companies, Telcos, ISPs and Data Centre Operators, please provide the requirements. The project also seems a very interesting study for the University Level Students in Computer Sciences. These are some of the basic questions I can think of: 1) How is the Data captured at local level i.e Is it a manual or automated process? 2) Is the data a push type or pull type of sevice? 3) What data formats does the Govt data provide? 4) What are the data visualization requirements? 5) Is each Ministry provided a module or template that allows for uniform data collections? 6) What were the bandwidth, system location, electricity, security, system security and redundancy requirements for a public hosted system? 7) How is the data integrity and accuracy ensured or what check mechanisms ensure data reliability? 8) What are the financial performances required to fulfill the project continuty? 9) In keeping with the large display Mobile and the 7inch screen devices ( such as iPad and the rest ), what requirements are placed on the core system? Government to Launch Open Data July 8th @KICC

*Listers* * * * * *The Government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Information of Communications will launch a new Government Open Data Portal on July 8, 2011 at the KICC that will, for the first time, make several large government datasets available to the general public in an easy to search and view format.* The launch will be presided over by HE President Mwai Kibaki . Program commences at 9.30 tomorrow. The web portal will allow citizens and the private sector to search and display national and county level data in graphs and maps and allow for easy comparison and analysis between datasets. **** ** ** For web and software developers, the portal will avail data in useable formats like cvs, Excel and will even include APIs for each dataset.**** ** ** The portal will be one of the first and largest government data portals in sub-Saharan Africa. With this launch, Kenya will become a leader among developing countries in the adoption of open data - a movement that is gathering momentum globally. **** * * *What is open data?***** Public information and searchable information are two different things. Much public data is already available by law but it's often not usable because it is in a format that is not easy to find, use and re-use. Published PDF files do not constitute "open data" and are not helpful to large-scale users.**** ** ** To be open, data must be:**** - easily found through search engines (meta-tagged)**** - available in machine readable formats (CSV, XML, APIs not PDF)**** - accessible by third party tools/applications (interoperable)**** - allow others to use and re-use for non-commercial and commercial use (e.g Creative Commons Licences)**** Open Data not only increases transparency and accountability but also promotes greater efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of public services by allowing users to easily consume and interpret data**** ** ** This is therefore to invite you to the launch.
