The good folks at EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) have a cool research project on digital privacy: Is your browser configuration rare or unique? If so, web sites may be able > to track you, even if you limit or disable cookies. Reminds me of a question asked in a presentation in a conference on computing and its tremendous impact on human life: - Can we recognize fundamental patterns of human behavior from raw *digital traces <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_traces>*? (Jon Kleinberg video at http://bit.ly/7dbuXm) Kleinberg describes an experiment they conducted using geo-tagged images from Flickr: they placed those images on a blank digital canvas, using latlong as co-ordinates on the canvas. A million or so images later, the images traced a map of the US (complete with canonical images for famous landmarks). All this without human intervention in placement, or annotation, of the maps. Very very very cool. I think the companies that will set themselves apart are the ones who harness the power of all these "human sensors" (passive crowdsourcing<http://www.mobilebehavior.com/2009/11/05/trend-stealth-crowdsourcing/> ). The Berkman Center for Internet and Society (Harvard Univ.) has a webcast coming up next Tuesday. Given the discussions on this list surrounding piracy in Kenya, it will be interesting to see empirical data from similar developing countries. Highly recommended. DNSSEC Deployment in Root Zone of DNS Begins at ICANN 27 January 2010 The collaboration between ICANN, the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and VeriSign, Inc. to deploy DNSSEC in the root zone of the Domain Name System (DNS) passed an important milestone today. DNSSEC information is now being served by L-Root, one of the Internet's 13 root servers, operated by ICANN. The DNS is vitally important to the proper operation of almost all services on the Internet, and the deployment of DNSSEC in the root zone is the biggest structural improvement to the DNS to happen in twenty years. The deployment of DNSSEC is proceeding with widespread involvement of the Internet's technical community, and is being carefully staged so that any unintended consequences of the deployment can be identified and mitigated promptly. ICANN engineers executed a maintenance procedure to introduce DNSSEC data into L-Root between 1800-2000 UTC on 27 January 2010. The maintenance was completed as planned. The reaction of the root server system as a whole to the change is being closely monitored, with root server operators performing extensive data collection to be analysed centrally. The data collection and analysis is being coordinated by DNS-OARC, the Domain Name System Operations Analysis and Research Center. Other root server operators will execute similar maintenance procedures in the coming months. Deployment of DNSSEC is proposed to be completed in July 2010. Hi, I now know why shell\BP are exiting Kenya, with a CEO like Mr Obath (now Chairman of Federation of Kenya Employee), says that implementation of the government directive on NSSF contributions for domestic staff is not feasible because of the resources required for registration and remittance you understand why. Can Mr. Obath please go and register for mpesa, ZAP or any other mobile money transfer system and then tell us how long it took. He also needs to know that the ID information is now digitised therefore allowing for mobile registration. With executives like this and techies raising issues about 3G no wonder we are unable to move forward.
