The defunct KPTC and many other organizations did contribute to this project but it did not take-off. How can we trust them now that SEACOM will not go the same direction? And even if Seacom will be a success story, they should refund the contributions for Africa One. Dear Yawe, I am sure my name has given me away too but I dont care much about that. Suffice it to say that this is not a forum for bar talk and that kind of stuff. This is a place for serious discussions. I am sure this kind of responses can make people to unsubscribe from this list, or make others start defending their political stand. For the years I have been a member of this list, I am sure Kictanet accommodates everybody irrespective of race, ethnic background or levels of development. This is a list with people beyond Kenya, who are interested in ICT policy and other attendant issues. If everybody came to narrate such stories online, I wonder what we will do during our free time when we are supposed to engage in idle talk. Let us restrict this kind of talk to political rallies and local pubs and let this forum be for serious ICT discussions. We must see beyond some of these things. If you have any bone to pick with my contribution please reply to me directly and not to the list. Walubengo has published guidelines on posting, I am sure he will be kind enough to re-post them just to remind ourselves how to conduct online discussions. Shim et al, For the first time I feel compelled to contribute to this discussions. I am basically in the same boat as Shim and trying to answer the same questions. Recently in Tanzania, I had a debate about Kenya and Tanzania and the question of tribalism came up. the first thing they say is Kenya is so tribal that each tribe has an FM radio station! Something Tanzanians can not allow and find strange. To me, a ban on tribal FM stations is long overdue. I believe that we need to be confident enough to let "other" people understand that which is being spoken and by this I am referring to the FM radio stations that use proprietary languages/dialects. I am not in any way against radio stations having a niche in terms of captive audience but I believe that they can still achieve their objective in a transparent language in this case - Kiswahili. This way, we shall eliminate all sorts of mistrusts that we are seeing today in this beautiful country. We don't need these vernacular radio stations in a country that is striving to move from the LDC quadrant. Shock is the numb, distancing feeling that engulfe when the bad news is being delivered 2. Disbelief is the stage in which do not do not believe the reports. 3. Denial is the the stage in which the we refuse to even consider that it exists and hope, e.g. "It'll soon go away by itself." 4. Anger occurs as the denial breaks down and the divisions become more real and apparent, "Why did this happen to us?" 5. Bargaining is evident when we decide that dedication will somehow alleviate the condition, "Maybe the problem will improve if we outlaw some 'tribal' embodiments." 6. Depression is evident when we start making statements like "What's the use?" "What will happen next?" - we may despair of ever finding a solution and feel sad and helpless. 7. Acceptance is the stage at which we can look past the tribe and accept people as they are. A stage beyond acceptance is to cherish our different cultures for those differences and for how that diversity has made our lives better. The goal of healing is to reach acceptance so that everyone is able to make appropriate decisions. At what stage could we consider ourselves at? Dear all, I totally agree with this and I happened to intentionally listen to some of the vernacular radio stations during the elections day (names undisclosed) and the content was quite inciting and tribal. As Geoffrey is saying I don't think there is anyone in Kenya today who does not understand Kiswahili and therefore we can have them using Swahili or English restrictively. We happen to have quite a number of English stations Kiss, Easy, Classics, Capital e.t.c and every morning as I go work I hear different people enjoying breakfast shows from different stations and as a result all of them are competing but are in business. The suggestions made earlier of the ICT bill and media self regulation helping to resolve the issue is not very practical considering for example that you need a Kikuyu to understand inciting information emanating from a Kikuyu radio station and the same with other tribes. Given the tribal alignment that we are seeing even in professional organizations media regulation may follow suit where we may have those supposed to ensure conformity being compromised because it is their tribe that is being affected. Radio stations should use languages that are nationally understandable to all. East Africa: M-Net commissions Kenya’s Big Ideas Entertainment to make first East African drama In its second major announcement in a week, M-Net confirmed its partnership with Big Ideas Entertainment, the Kenyan TV company which has been commissioned to produce M-Net’s first ever East-African drama series. Breaking the news of the Big Ideas appointment, just 5 months after M-Net first revealed its intention to create a regionalized drama series, was M-Net’s Director of Operations for sub-Saharan Africa Joseph Hundah. ''I say this frequently because it’s true. M-Net is determined to continue to pioneer new African content. We very definitely will meet the needs of audiences in this market to see their own stories on our screens. M-Net will continue creating strong programs that enable MultiChoice Africa to provide the best local content value to DStv viewers.'' He went on to say, ''From the moment M-Net began calling for series proposals on June 4, we started receiving creative ideas. It was a long process of evaluation before we made our final decision. In Big Ideas Entertainment, we have an ally who shares our vision and aims to deliver viewing which East African audiences can relate to and enjoy.'' The process of selection was a rigorous one and began immediately after the deadline for entries closed in August. All proposals received were evaluated critically by a team of four experts including M-Net Program Manager for East Africa Wangeci Murage and Kenya’s Catholic University lecturer of literature, theatre and drama Simon Peter. Thereafter a key M-Net panel also deliberated over the proposals and the evaluations before short-listing six companies for the pitching round. These pitching sessions where held early in October in Nairobi and it was here that Big Ideas Entertainment put forward their winning pitch. Telling stories of love, hope, triumph and tragedy, their series follows three couples as they juggle the demands of work, marriage and family. Set against a contemporary East African backdrop, reflecting the societies in which they live and the challenges which they share, the three couples are at the heart of this entertaining, inspirational, realistic look at modern life in Africa today. Now in pre-production and with its name still be finalized, the series is set to make M-Net history, drawing actors from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and using local crew. The Big Ideas Entertainment team of Njoki Muhoho (Executive Producer), Willie Owusu (DOP) and Aleks Kamau (Editor) will helm the show with Serah Mwihaki on the writing staff. Angola: Angolan actors in crime film 'killed by police' The director of an Angolan crime film says police have shot dead two of his actors after mistaking them for real armed robbers. The duo were carrying unloaded firearms as they filmed a scene in a rough suburb of the capital Luanda, director Radical Ribeiro told AFP news agency.
